Thanks, John, for the Website. I have lived in the Indianapolis area since 1978. I have married almost 23 years to my wife Donna. We have two children. Justin is 20 years old and is a sophomore at Butler and Nikki is a junior at Pike High School. I currently work for the State Budget Agency as a Budget Analyst. No, the fiscal crisis is not my fault. Anyone can forget a decimal point. For those of you that haven't heard, Mark Scharer fell from a ladder on March 23rd while working on a construction project in Indianapolis and is paralyzed from the waist down. He is currently in the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indianapolis, 4141 Shore Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46214. He is in fairly good spirits, but could use some encouragement from friends. Please feel free to send a card to the hospital or his home address (posted on this website) and give him your best wishes.

Just setting here on a Saturday afternoon and thought I would see what was new.I saw where Sherry mentioned our daughter in a post. She did deploy on The Kitty Hawk after 9/11, they were off the coast of Pakistan which blew our Christmas plans out of the water. She is home for a couple weeks, then back to Japan and back out on the Kitty Hawk to places unknown for 6 months. You would think after 5 and a half years I would be used to it....NOT! Anyway for now she and her boyfriend are home...safe! I'm surprised Sherry remembers me. It's been so long since I e-mailed her. Sorry! So, any reunion plans in the works?

We have three children: Mike who is 24 years old, Jessica who is married and she is 22 years old (she has a daughter, our first grandchild) and our youngest is Ross, he is 18. Mike spent a few years in the Marines and now works in law enforcement, Jessica is married to a sailor and Ross is just finishing his Senior year. He is an Illinois all state running back and has a few college scholarships to consider now. This is a great site and it is good to see familiar names again, it has been a long time. I always missed the reunions as I was deployed over seas.

re: cathy herzog

cathy and i kept up for a few years. i moved out of the country in 77, returned in 79, and saw her late that year. she had been living in the bay area, but was traveling east cross-country on one of ken kesey's buses; the "gray hare" or the "green tortoise", i don't recall which. i promised to meet her bus in one of those tree-canopied northern indiana towns just off the interstate, about dusk, on a very-summer night, no more than two weeks after my having moved back to the states. i sat in a bar for an hour waiting for the bus and made small talk with the local men, eating little-chicken-dinners (hardboiled eggs) and drinking beers. cathy's entrance into that small town raised all eyebrows (both of mine) as intended, when she and cumuli clouds of pot-smoke and reggae music boiled off that bus.

a beautiful sight is one that we all get a kick out of.

like so many of the people in our class, cathy had much to teach us. i sometimes mistake learning with fitting in. i don't live there anymore, but those very-summer evenings in indiana are wonderful.

Elaine Doss

I want to share a Harrison story about Steve Doss...He had grown up in Lafayette, and since about 3rd grade had gone to city schools.  His parents moved to Battle Ground and Steve had to transfer.  He wasn't happy about this.  He had been in a bad car wreck in March of 1972, and was very thin, with very little stamina when he first went to Harrison.  (These are my recollections of his recollections.)

Anyway, on his first day at Harrison, he pulled into the parking lot with some hot car, filled with distain for his new "county" school.  He looked out his window just as someone pulled into the space next to him driving a tractor.  This was the icing on the cake for him.  Incidentally, I graduated from Wainwright, so having classmates arrive on tractors or farm trucks was no big deal to me.

John, you do whatever you want with these emails. I am very public about Steve and his life and death.  I hope that it inspires more dialog about the horrible way that we in society tend to treat our addicts--as disposable people.  I am also attaching a story that Steve wrote.  It was his vision of our life in retirement.  To me, it seems a good way for people to understand the essence of our relationship.

I think it is a shame that you and Steve never got a chance to really talk.  He would have enjoyed and appreciated that.  He liked himself much better the last few years.  His inability to control his drinking taught him humility.  Let me share his words that he wrote form Putnam Co. Jail in 1997...

[click here to read Steve's letter from jail]

As I mentioned, I have over 800 pages of letters from Steve. They make me laugh and cry.  Above all, they make me think about my own life and how blessed I am for having known Steve.  Someday I hope to publish his writings.  I know that others would benefit.  In the meantime, if you see fit to put some of this on the Harrison page, please do.

If you ever have ideas or questions about addiction, please feel free to share it.  I want to help prevent another needless death.

Sincerely,
Elaine Doss

Elaine, I'm flattered that you would feel comfortable enough and passionate enough to share so openly about Steve. My heart is touched with your descriptions of Steve turning to Christ.

One reason he and I were not close in high school is that I was a bit of a goody-two-shoes preacher's kid and Steve was... well, not that. I don't mean anything by that except that we ran in different circles. My current position is general manager of The Southeast Outlook, a Christian newspaper ministry in Louisville. The irony between how different he and I were in High School and how similar our professions and faith turned out to be, creates even more regret that I did not know him better back then.

In fact, I know there are a lot of my classmates that I had opportunities to reach out to but never did because I "wasn't comfortable." I'm sure I'll get a chance to explain myself someday, but I'm just as sure that I have no good explanations. But we keep trying and looking for opportunities, and my heart still has a soft place of enormous size for my classmates as I remember them, and as I've stayed in contact with a few. That's probably one reason I'd like to do something on the web in Steve's memory that might touch someone else who needs touching.

One thing I'd like to do is to include some of what you've written to me about Steve's last few years in the "Raider Rambles" message board. I think it would be good for his friends to know about his struggles and faith; who knows who might join in. I know there was quite a scramble for information when we first learned he had passed away and the newspaper clippings were all we were able to find, so I know there are others who would be interested.

Thank you again for sharing. Perhaps we'll get the chance to meet someday.

Hi John, Thank you for the response. I must confess that whenever anyone mentions that they knew Steve, I really want to share things.

I only met Steve in 1996. I noticed by your signature line, the reference to Ecclesiastes. Steve never went to any church as a child. In his mid-30's, he began to study many religions and became a very devout Christian. It was his faith that kept him going.

Steve spent a year of the last two years of his life in Tippecanoe County Jail for alcohol related charges. Not DUI, but public intoxication, and once he tried to steal a bottle of mouthwash to drink. This was very hard for Steve to reconcile with his prior life as a newspaper executive with USA Today. He left that profession when he recognized that the lifestyle was contributing to his alcoholism. He got his BA, MA and was one year away from his PhD from Univ of KY.

Anyway, we had long periods of separation during the 3 1/2 years that we knew each other. This weekend I organized the boxes of letters I had gotten from him sequentially. I have over 800 pages of his letters to me. Plus, he wrote 2 novels and many short stories during his incarcerations and his time in rehab. The overwhelming theme in his writing is that "this is God's Will. I pray for the strength to follow His Will." He sent me so many references to The Word and helped me grow spiritually. It is my faith that helps me cope with my loss.

John, I am sorry to go on, so, but as you must have noted, I love to talk about Steve. He was truly a gift to me from God. Let me get back with you on the reference to web pages. It is a great idea! I just want to make sure to do this correctly. If you have read this far, I appreciate your time.

Sincerely, Elaine Doss

Elaine, thank you for your note. I was so sorry to hear about Steve and about his struggle the last few years. I did not know him well in high school, but it doesn't take being best friends to grieve when someone we know suffers like that. If you have any ideas about something we could do on the website in his memory, such as a link to a web page of an organization you work with, let me know and I'll take care of it.

I am living in the mideast(Saudi Arabia) with my husband of 21 years Brian Wallick. He is a geophysicist with Saudi Aramco. We have just been here 2 months and are still getting used to life here. We moved here from Houston, TX and prior to that were in Slidell, LA(just north of New Orleans.) For the first time in my life I am not employed outside the home and am working on adjusting to that fact! We look forward to traveling and have trips planned to France and Greece in 2001. Women do not work ouside the home in Saudi Arabia unless it is a situation where only women are present. All shops and businesses are run by men, including women's apparel shops! Women in Saudi Arabia are required to cover themselves when outside of their homes. They wear black shrouds(aballah)and long black head scarves and veils. Some women even wear black gloves. As dependents of Aramco employees, western women are not required to wear this although we often wear just the robe part when we're in town because it's just easier. People really stare if you don't. I am really going to enjoy logging on, specially now with us being so far away. And yes, I would really appreciate it if you could update my demographics etc. on the site.

Quick update on our move...

Bobbi & I now live in Louisville, KY. After 21 years in Hoosierland, and 13 in the electric industry, I (we) have accepted a ministry position in association with Southeast Christian Church. They have their own weekly newspaper here and they asked me to be their General Manager.

Bobbi still has her consulting business in Portland (BKSafety.Net) and is exploring ways to expand it and to run it from Louisville. We've downsized considerably and are now living in an apartment for the first time in 25 years so life is pretty interesting right now. Our daughter, Alain, is finishing her degree at Ball State while running the office for Bobbi's business in Jay County. Our son, Shayne, is still patching Apaches for Uncle Sam in Germany. We'd love to hear from you...

Ms. "Women's Lib" has found that the hardest job in the world is being Wife and Mother!!! But for many years I was "Ms I can do everything all by myself". So I have been in the "real world" but there is no more Liberating, more Important, or harder job than bringing a family together and dedicating it to God. My husband Jim Gross graduated from Elwood High in Elwood, and has 3 years left in his Air Force career. Our two children Robert & Rebecca are 17, they are not twins but it may happen someday. In less than 3 years they have advanced to the point of being friends. They will both graduate next year so now it is going to Mom's turn to start a new direction. I have recently started the process to seek a Canidacy in the Methodist Ministry. Which will be a 3-7 year process, by the Grace of God. So 27 years after graduation I am just starting my future, luckily it's one that will last for Eternity!
